Elbow Wraps

Elbow support becomes particularly useful when pressing weights get heavier. The elbow works in almost every upper-body exercise, including presses, dips, triceps extensions and pull-ups. A close-fitting support surrounds the joint, helps retain warmth and can provide a more stable feeling under load. This category includes elbow supports and wraps for strength training, powerlifting and CrossFit: neoprene compression sleeves, elastic elbow wraps and supports in different thicknesses and sizes.

Which types of training use elbow supports?

Elbow supports are especially popular with people who train with heavy weights, including powerlifters, gym athletes and CrossFit athletes. They are commonly worn for bench presses, overhead presses, dips, triceps extensions and other exercises where the elbow takes substantial load. Many athletes wear an elbow support during warm-ups and early sets to keep the joint area warm and comfortable.

Types of elbow supports

  • Compression sleeves (elbow sleeves) - close-fitting neoprene sleeves worn over the elbow. They provide compression and retain warmth while allowing the arm to bend. This is the most popular option for strength training.
  • Elbow wraps - long elastic wraps wound around the joint. They provide firmer support than sleeves and are mainly used for the heaviest sets.
  • Elastic supports with hook-and-loop fastening - easy to put on and adjustable for tightness. Suitable for functional training and moderate loads.
  • Orthopaedic supports and braces - products with stronger fixation intended for rehabilitation or medical conditions. These should be selected with professional guidance and are not intended for ordinary training.

How to choose an elbow support

  • Size. This is particularly important for sleeves. A support that is too loose will not stay in place, while one that is too tight can excessively compress the arm. Follow the manufacturer's size chart.
  • Neoprene thickness. Thinner sleeves are more flexible and work well for varied training. Thicker sleeves provide firmer support and retain more warmth, which is useful for heavy compound exercises.
  • Type of support. Sleeves are suitable for longer use during a workout, while wraps are generally used for individual heavy sets.
  • Competition rules. If you compete in powerlifting, check your federation rules because permitted materials, thickness and dimensions can differ.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose an elbow sleeve or an elbow wrap?

For most workouts, a sleeve is more convenient because it can be put on once and worn throughout the session without restricting normal elbow movement too much. A wrap provides firmer support but is usually applied before a heavy set and removed afterwards. Some athletes use both for different situations.

Can I train with an elbow support if my elbow hurts?

If the elbow is painful, swollen or the pain lasts for several days, seek medical advice. Pain on the inside or outside of the elbow may be associated with epicondylitis and may require assessment and a brace selected by a professional. A sports support does not replace diagnosis or treatment.
